To obtain good harvests of garlic, it is most important to determine which soil is most suitable for garlic and how to prepare it properly.
Optimal soil for garlic (summary):
Type of soil | Loamy and sandy loamy soils
The best soils for garlic are non-flooded floodplains, light loamy and sandy loamy black earth (humus).Heavy loamy and sandy soils are not suitable for garlic. |
Relief | Without deflections (in which water could stagnate in the spring) and elevations (where strong winter winds blow away snow and can promote the freezing of the culture). |
Watering | Garlic it is necessary to provide irrigation. On the field needs a well or a pond |
PH value | 6,5-7,9. Does not like acidic soils. Sour soils should be limed. |
Good predecessors | Predecessor must vacate the pitch no later than the end of July.
Grains, legumes for green forage, hay and silage, annual and perennial herbs to feed, clean and green manure couples After a well-fertilized legumes, pumpkin, early cabbage and cauliflower, root vegetables on beam products, early greens |
Bad predecessors | Potatoes, tomatoes, crops of the Onion family, because they share a common disease and common pests
Re-grow a garlic on the garlic or onions valid not earlier than after 4-5 years |
Note | The introduction of fresh manure has a negative impact – reduced phytosanitary quality products.
Garlic has a positive opinion on the aftereffect of organic fertilizers |

Rotation of garlic
So it is best if in the field until planting garlic grown: winter wheat, beans, cucumber, zucchini, green culture, early, early cabbage and cauliflower.
Previous culture must be collected no later than 30-40 days before planting garlic. That is until around the end of August.
It is advised not to repeat crops of garlic on the same field in the next few years, because of the possible development of diseases. Although in practice, with proper care for seeds and crops, this period may be reduced to 1-2 years.
Preparing the soil for garlic
Peeling of the field. Conducted directly after the predecessor to a depth of 6-8 cm disc plows in the two tracks. Peeling should be held simultaneously with the wiping of culture, the predecessor of the garlic. Main task is to control weeds and improve physical soil characteristics.
Winter plowing. Follow-up operation. It is performed 12 to 14 days after peeling in a perpendicular direction to the first treatment, to a depth of 25-27 cm. With this treatment, the weeded weeds are killed and closed into the soil of the fertilizer. Plowing is carried out 30-50 days before planting garlic.
Mineral and organic fertilizers are applied to plowing:
mineral:
- for sprinkling N90-120P60-150K60-120
- drip irrigation is used, the fractional application of fertilizers under plowing 35-50%, the rest by fertigation (through the drip)
organic:
- organic — 40-60 t/ha of humus
Preplant cultivation is carried out on the day of planting garlic at a 90° angle to the plowing.
Fertilizer of the soil under the garlic
Garlic responds positively to the application of organic and mineral fertilizers
Organic fertilizers for garlic are made in the form of humus or compost 40-60 t / ha. Once again pay attention – fresh manure is not recommended.
They are brought in autumn under autumn plowing.
Mineral fertilizers must be introduced taking into account the indices of soil cartograms. The application rates range from 60-150 kg ai / ha.
For example, it might look like this:
For ordinary humus: N120P90K60 kg / ha active ingredient
You can apply fertilizers throughout the Area or locally in a row. If you make it locally in the row then the rate of application of mineral fertilizers is reduced by 2-3 times.
Mineral fertilizers are introduced in autumn under plowing or in spring under early cultivation.
